MI, USA : The World Health Organization and EPA predict that radon gas will be the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers in 2011. To address this epidemic, National Radon Awareness Week has been announced as: October 17th - 24th. This is the ideal time for Americans to test their homes and workplaces for radon gas.
Local, state, and National health agencies are urging the media to write articles and promote this growing health issue. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over 6-million homes in United States have a radon problem and the toxic gas claimed the lives of over 21,000 Americans last year (more than fires, carbon monoxide, and guns combined!)
Radon is a naturally-occurring, invisible and odorless radioactive gas. One in 15 American homes contains high levels of radon. Millions of Americans are unknowingly exposed to this dangerous gas. In fact, a recent study by Harvard University ranks radon as America’s #1 in-home hazard. By taking simple steps to test your home for radon and fix if necessary, this health hazard can be avoided. According to radon mitigator Ross Aton: "Radon gas is not isolated to certain geographical areas or home types; radon problems have been detected in homes in every county of the U.S." It caused more American fatalities last year than carbon monoxide, fires, and handguns combined! If a home hasn't been tested for radon in the past two years, EPA and the Surgeon General urge you to take action. Contact your state radon office for information on locating qualified test kits or qualified radon testers.
"Radon testing is not expensive nor is it difficult," states James Gelina. His firm, Air Quality Control Agency performs radon testing and mitigation in over 10,000 homes and buildings each year. "Every home should be tested. Any home could have a radon problem," adds his business partner Dan Tompkins. By participating in National Radon Week, you can help reduce the number of radon-induced fatalities in the future. A short story or other form of media attention that you can offer will go a long way toward stopping this deadly killer. Radon testing is easy, inexpensive, and saves lives!
