The CAT entrance exam of this year will witness changes in the paper pattern. The other big change has been that CAT has now become super entrance exam with India’s top management institutions scrapping their own entrance exams and switching over to CAT for MBA admissions 2012.
The big institutions that have entered the CAT camp are FMS, University of Delhi; Department of Management Studies of different IITs and MICA Ahmedabad.
These developments have brought sigh of relief for many MBA aspirants, as now they can aim to enter these top league B schools in addition to the IIMs – which have increased to 13 – by giving one single entrance exam.
For the MBA aspirants it is definitely good news as they do not have to take multiple MBA entrance exams and they can save the time and money by focusing on CAT 2011. But on the other hand, it has also made those students upset who were doing special preparation for the FMS and JMET entrance exams.
To get the overall perspective on the impact of FMS, MICA and IITs switching over to CAT 2011, MBAUniverse.com talked to the B-School Directors and CAT experts.
According to Directors and Deans of top B schools the first impact is likely to be on the number of the CAT takers, which has witnessed a slide in the past 4 years.
Dr. J K Das, Director, FORE School of Management, Delhi said, “I do not think that CAT format change will impact the number of students taking the CAT. In fact, with the announced discontinuation of IIT exam for management, and the discontinuation of FMS entrance test, some other institutes may also announce discontinuation of their entrance test in favor of CAT. Thus, as a result this year there may actually be an increase in CAT registration.”
Similar opinion was voiced by Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH Greater Noida. “As a result of the inclusion of the IITs and FMS Delhi, the number of test takers will increase, as the aspirants of these B-schools too will register for CAT 2011,” said Dr. Chaturvedi.
According to Dr. B A Metri, Dean, Strathclyde SKIL Business School, Greater Noida, it is a win-win situation for all the stake holders, be it the IIMs, or the allied B-schools or the test takers.
All this is good sign for CAT and the associated B schools, but for MBA aspirants it will be even harder to crack the exam and get the requisite percentile, as the competition will be much greater.
“With the increase in the number of test takers, it is evident that getting a better CAT percentile would become more competitive,” Dr. Das mentioned.
In terms of competition, Dr. Chaturvedi felt, “Yes, this development will make CAT 2011 a tough competition for test takers. But it is a healthy competition for all the stakeholders.”
Resonating the views of the B-School directors, the CAT experts feel that it is a good move.
Nishit K Sinha, Author of CAT preparation books and IIM Lucknow alumnus mentioned, “This is a welcome move. The Ministry of HRD had mentioned about a unified exam before and this is just a start of it. FMS and IITs & IISc joining hands with CAT is a big advantage for the CAT aspirants. They can focus on CAT exam only, rather than the separate preparation for the erstwhile JMET and FMS entrance exams.”
“The fight for the 100 percentile would have always remained the same. The same people would have taken the JMET and FMS exams also and hence the competitiveness of the CAT exam will not see much difference,” said Xavier.
According to Gupta, “Those who are serious students, they will always be on top, no matter how many institutes are participating in the CAT exam. Amongst the DMS of the IITs, IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai are on the top along with FMS. So the student who will crack CAT 2011 will get calls from the top institutes and the subsequent percentile scorers will get calls from the other institutes. It all depends on the quality of the students.”
