New Report finds that Cost is Not Always the Most Important Factor in Logistic Decisions

A new report from IMARC Group entitled “Global Healthcare Cold Chain Logistics Market Report & Forecast (2011-2016)” finds that in the case of temperature sensitive healthcare products, cost is not always the most important factor in logistic decisions. Most biological products have well defined logistic needs with their ideal storage and transportation temperatures mostly ranging between 2°C - 8°C. Any failures in maintaining these temperatures can lead to a significant loss in the products efficacy and can even make it harmful for the patient.
Findings from the report suggest that while pharmaceutical manufacturers spend 30% and 16% of their sales in marketing and R&D respectively, only 3% of their total sales are spent on logistics. The report also found that currently around 5% of the air cargo volume consists of perishable goods with healthcare products representing less than 5% of this volume. When it came to value, however, the majority of perishable freight value was attributed by pharmaceuticals and biotech products.
