Light Middle East Welcomed 4,717 Trade Visitors From Close To 80 Countries
Conference line up strongly positions event in regional lighting design and technology industries
Energy efficiency and the latest trends and developments impacting the industry took the spotlight

Light Middle East 2011 concluded this month on a positive note with a 23% increase in visitor numbers from the previous edition. The 2011 edition of the region’s premier conference and exhibition for lighting design and technology welcomed 4,717 visitors from nearly 80 countries with a near 40% international attendance.
The exhibition featured 150 exhibitors including some key industry players and the conference also enjoyed strong industry support. The top five visiting countries to this year’s edition, after UAE, were, Saudi Arabia, Iran, India, Qatar and Oman, confirming the exhibitions clout for reaching out to key countries of the region which can traditionally be more difficult to penetrate.
Ahmed Pauwels, Chief Executive Officer, of organiser Epoc Messe Frankfurt expressed his satisfaction on the results, stating: “Light Middle East is an event which has been tailored to serve this specialised sector which is currently under a state of change and development in the GCC and surrounding regions. What is fascinating about the industry here is that experts get the opportunity to work on some ground breaking projects due to the myriad of avant garde architecture which are developed in the region.”
“Light Middle East now serves as a platform to discuss these projects thanks to its extensive conference line-up and regional focus. We are greatful to our exhibitors for their continued support of the show,” Pauwels added.
Light Middle East in 2011 featured some of the industry’s leading players including Ruud Lighting Arabia, Thorn and Zumtobel brands of The Zumtobel Group, Philips Lumileds, Schreder Gulf LLC, GE Lighting and OSRAM.
Environmentally friendly products, energy efficiency and green solutions were buzz words at this year’s edition. Manufacturers also chose the trade event as the stage to launch a raft of new products into the region – the specialized nature of the event making it a vital part of most companys’ promotional campaigns.
Commenting on the show’s worth, Mr. Mark van der Berg, Director of Marketing, EMEA, Philips Lumileds, said: “I believe in the value of shows that provide the opportunity to have deeper, more detailed discussions. We have had people from the entire lighting community visit our stand including OEMs, end-users, contractors, installers and agents. We left Light Middle East with new opportunities and a refreshed appreciation for our customers’ needs in this region.”
Gabriel Abdelhakmi Gaisne, Head of Marketing, MENA region for the Zumtobel Group, noticed that new industry trends were represented at the event, stating: “We really see the new trends in the market at Light Middle East. We are very glad that the customers are asking the right questions. All the new products we launched at Light Middle East met with great success.” He also commented on the added value of the conference, stating: “The conference was great because it benefits the visitors as it helps them to have a filter on the reality of what they’re being told.”
Local exhibitor and debutant to Light Middle East was PTL Solar. Shahzad Qaiser, from PTL Solar, commented: “We have had a lot of visitors from Africa and got leads from Syria, Oman and Saudi Arabia. We would definitely come back,” while European exhibitor Festoni Bulgaria, commented about the event’s value for understanding the regional marketplace, stating: “We don’t know this market and that is why we are here. We are trying to expand our market here and so Light Middle East is a good place for us to be.”
New to this year’s edition was the GE Best in Class lighting design competition where a selection of graduating students showed creative solutions in two different competition categories. The competition promoted innovation and eco-consciousness amongst students from the American University in Dubai.
Tamer Al Shaer, Regional Channel Manager, GE Lighting, said: “Promoting student talent with a focus on pro-moting aesthetics and energy savings in lighting is central to GE’s approach for the region. The GE Best in Class Lighting Competition contributed several compelling designs and energy saving options, which draw on the diverse array of lighting options provided by GE Lighting. The creativity and innovation demonstrated by the students are of high standards and through the competition, we hope to encourage them further.”
As the Middle East’s premier conference and exhibition for lighting design and technology, Light Middle East spotlights innovations in the fields of lighting design, lighting solutions and new technology as well as the latest trends and developments that are impacting the worldwide industry. It is part of the world-renowned Light + Building brand family of which the main event takes place bi-annually in Frankfurt. The next edition of Light + Building in Frankfurt will take place 15th to 20th April, 2012.
