This October, the first of nearly a dozen highly anticipated Frankenstein adaptations hits Kindles everywhere.

This Halloween, Frankenstein will return from the shadows of libraries, film vaults and pop culture to wreak havoc on the vampires and werewolves that have dominated the media in recent years. Nearly a dozen adaptations of Mary Shelley’s classic story are set to be released over the next two years, with the first arriving on the Amazon.com Kindle Store in October 2011. Skankenstein promises to be one of the most faithful adaptations to Shelley’s novel, even though co-authors Katie Reiter and David Fumarola have ditched the graveyards and dark laboratories in favor of proms and plastic surgeons in their modern re-imagining.
In this adaptation, Victor Frankenstein is reborn as Victoria Frank, a ruthless teen queen with ambitions to conquer the world of fashion design. It’s only after her project goes horribly awry that we start to get a sense of the horror that people have come to expect from the classic story. “It definitely has a lot of humor, but we wanted to keep the dark and twisted themes of the original,” said Ms. Reiter.
It was important to the authors that they kept a balance between entertainment and social relevance, to not just retell the story, but to offer something new through the familiar tale. “We wanted it to follow the same structure as Shelley’s Frankenstein because we knew the tone was a major departure from the source material,” said Mr. Fumarola. “We wanted people to be able to open it anywhere and still recognize that it’s a version of Frankenstein.”
Other upcoming Frankenstein projects include the futuristic Wake the Dead, starring Hayley Joel Osment, an adaptation of Peter Ackroyd’s The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, and an adaptation of Kenneth Oppel’s The Dark Endeavor. Lighter fare includes Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Bruce Campbell’s Bruce Vs. Frankenstein. Director Guillermo Del Toro has also expressed interest in taking on Frankenstein as a dream project.
