Ahmedabad, October 20th: Charting success stories in India’s Liver Transplant Program, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad conducted the second successful living donor liver transplant surgery in the state of Gujarat. Speaking on the occasion of the discharge of the patient, Dr. Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group and Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist said “In 1998 Apollo Delhi performed the first successful pediatric and adult liver transplants in India. Till date we have conducted 776 Liver Transplants, of which 65 have been of children. Now the Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad has an established a state of the art Liver Transplantation unit with excellent results. We are confident that this program will become one of the most successful in the country and will be our small contribution to the health and wellbeing of Gujarat and the nation”.
The patient, Mr. Allaik Balakrushna Vaidya (57) from Navsari suffered from chronic liver disease for the last few months and was advised by the doctors that he should undergo a liver transplant surgery as soon as possible. The lack of an organ to transplant posed a problem for the family but bravely his son Mr. Chirag Vaidya (31) came forward and agreed to donate a part of his life to give life to his father.
Dr. Subash Gupta, Chief Consultant Liver Transplantation, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi who has been guiding the development of liver transplantation across several Apollo Hospitals including Ahmedabad said, “This success shows the collective strength of the Apollo Hospitals Group. The living donor liver transplant surgery is considerably more complicated than a cadaver liver transplant”, he commented.
Liver Transplant surgeries are highly complex and require trained surgeons supported by state of the art infrastructure to ensure successful outcomes. Apollo Hospitals Group’s Apollo Transplant Institutes is the world’s second busiest program in organ transplantation an in 2010 completed 775 transplants –making it amongst best centers in the world. Commenting on the program in Ahmedabad, Dr. Chirag Desai, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, Ahmedabad added “Not only are we focused on the recipient surgery we also exercise extreme care towards donor safety. We are delighted that all our patients are doing well. Now we want to focus on cadaver donation, so that we can even save more lives.”

Vani Khiria from Ahmedabad was one of the youngest patients at 7 months to undergo a successful Liver Transplant at Apollo Delhi. We are proud to state thattoday at the age of 2.5 yrs Vani is doing all the things which kids her age do.
