Our digestive system is a complex system, the food eaten by us goes there, and got converted into digestible form by some enzymes. All essential nutrients from the food are taken away and pass into the body by the circulated blood. Gastroenterology is the branch of science, in which the digestive system and its disorders are studied. In the diseases related to gastroenterology tract the organs from mouth to anus are affected along the alimentary canal. In the digestive system the food is taken into the body through the mouth, here it is broken down by proper chewing and natural body fluids which are produced in mouth.
This broken down food is then passed into the stomach through esophagus, in the stomach it is combined with digestive enzymes for further breakdown. The food nutrients are absorbed by the body through small intestine. The average small intestine is 22 feet long, and the length of large intestine is 5 feet. The waste or roughage from the food is passed through the small intestine to large intestine, from there it passed out through the rectum. If not enough liquid is consumed by body then constipation may occur. Enough liquid intakes moisten the feces. This process involves some other organs also such as pancreas; it exists under the stomach and connected to the small intestine through the duodenum. Pancreas produces insulin and glucomen; the enzymes of the digestive system break down the food and convert it into carbohydrates, proteins, fats etc. The body however reacts for some foods and causes reaction for them like heartburn, gas etc.
The liver plays major role in the digestion and affects the body metabolism. Although these reactions are usually harmless and natural. Many things can go wrong with the body that includes minor ailments also like ulcers, which are caused by gastric acid; major ailments of the stomach are liver failure, inflammatory bowel disease etc. In the study of gastroenterology the complex digestive system is studied.
The specialist of this field diagnoses and treats ailments of the system. The digestive system fuels our body and helps the body to function properly. This system involves esophagus, stomach, pancreas and small and large intestine. The proper care of the system can be taken by eating healthy and nutritional diet. A plenty of water is also useful.
