Come mid-January and for most of us, paleness starts and seems to be a permanent condition. Thankfully, the market is flooded with affordable sun tanning products. Of course, these lotions cannot beat sitting on a Hawaiian beach, but they do protect you from the harmful effects of sun exposure.
With a glut of tanning products lining the cosmetic shelves, it is often difficult choosing the right ones. “I am forever looking for a product that is safe, easy to apply and cheap too,” says an exasperated housewife, who is overwhelmed by the surfeit of brands, each making some outlandish claims. We would not envy her. Some claim that the new flower extracts extends the life of a tan for up to 10 days. Others assert the new launch will no longer have stains rubbing off on your sheets. These are just two of many examples.
Have the gimmicks and empty promises gone out of hand? May be not. It is just that manufacturers are operating in a cutthroat market and looking for inventive ways to beat competition. The fact is all sunless products in the market today have the same two active ingredients, DHA and erythrulose. Both these react on the dead skin to produce orange-brown color.
Then what is the way out for consumer? Here are some tips on how to fake without being scorched.
First things first
Check your bathroom shelf. If you see some tanning brands sitting on the shelf from last summer, toss them out. Sunless lotions are best used within six months of purchase.
On buying
Remember, the most expensive is not necessarily better. What you need is something that suits your skin. Each self-tanner will react differently on your skin. While choosing, obviously the color of your skin will guide you. If you have light skin, very dark self-tanning brands will make your tan look faker.
On applying
The first step to a smooth application is exfoliation of the driest areas of your skin. Typically, these areas are knees and elbows. Skin should be free of soap and moisturizer. Soap is alkaline and when it mixes with DHA (the active ingredient in all sunless tanners) causes the skin to turn orange. Wait for half an hour before getting dressed. If you want a deeper tan, wait for an hour or two before applying the second layer.
Extending the tan
To maintain and extend the tan, apply moisturizer every day and the self tanning lotion every other day.
Among the innovative products, gradual tanners seem to have caught fancy with many. One benefit of these tanners is the absence of uneven coloring or streaking that is so common with sprays and instant tanners. “The effect in gradual tanners build-up over time and I do not end up with a single stripe of pale skin”, says a makeup artist who has tried several brands in the past.
Newer sunless products will continue to bump the market. The consumer however will need to be finicky while making a purchase.
