Whether you are trying to learn to be a leader or you have already established your leadership skills, one of the most important aspects of your leadership ability is implementation. This simple word can have so many meanings in different contexts, but to a leader it means one thing; finishing the job!
Most people in a leadership role understand that first you must create an atmosphere that makes people want to follow you. Next you have to provide everything everyone will need in order to be successful, and then you need to set realistic goals.Once all of this is done your job as a leader is really just beginning, because anyone can do the first few steps, a real leader, a true visionary can take the final step without anyone ever worrying that it will get done and that is implementation.
Any mid-level manager can plan, but a true leader provides what is necessary to get the job done. The implementation stage is where you move beyond planning and goal setting, and get people moving. This is where the real work is and this is where many a project has fallen apart.
Nothing is worse than spending days, weeks, maybe even months creating the best plan ever and then no one wants to get it done. This is where you are going to have to step up to the plate and motivate. How are you going to motivate? Some of that is going to depend on your leadership style and personality, the best suggestion however is that you are going to implement by any means necessary.
Look at the people following you; evaluate their motivation level and then move forward accordingly. One of the keys to true motivation is to understand that a person’s motivation can and will change daily, what you did yesterday may not work today. One key however is to always keep in mind that people do not like to be yelled at.
Yelling and getting upset does not get anything done and this is a very old style of management that is truly outdated. Treat people with respect and they will usually respond and treating people nice does not mean that you become a door mat. It is completely possible to be firm and nice at the same time.
Once you have motivated and got your followers working, now is the final part of the puzzle, keep them motivated, pick people involved with the project and let them handle things for a while. Spread the responsibility around, because a true leader does not worry about getting the credit, they are much more concerned with the task at hand.
A true leader can finish the project implementing the perfect amount of what is needed to get the job done.
