What does Bing's growth mean for Search Engine Optimization?
What does Bing's growth mean for Search Engine Optimization?
Bing is the newest of the three search engines having replaced Microsoft's Live Search brand in 2009. Google was founded in 1998 so it has an eleven year head start on Bing. Yahoo is the oldest of the three search engines having been founded in 1994.

It is an obvious but noteworthy fact that search engine optimization would be irrelevant without the means to search. Content to search for is also a key ingredient, but without search engines SEO would be pointless. Fortunately there is an abundance of search engines on the internet. Most people can probably only name ten at the most, but there are thousands all over the internet catering to specific content and specific countries. They are not all good, in fact most are hardly worth mentioning at all. The main search engines that people will have heard of and used are Google, Yahoo and Bing. As of August 2011 those three search engines together cover more than 95% of the US Search Engine Market Share.
Bing is the newest of the three search engines having replaced Microsoft's Live Search brand in 2009. Google was founded in 1998 so it has an eleven year head start on Bing. Yahoo is the oldest of the three search engines having been founded in 1994. In the late 90s Yahoo was the most popular search engine but the rise of Google quickly stunted its growth. In the year 2000 Yahoo started using Google's engine to power its searches, however, It now uses Microsoft's Bing to power its searches.
Google is the major player and dominant force in search engines. The name Google has even become an acceptable verb; I.e. “to Google” and was added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary in 2006. According to the latest data released by Experian Hitwise Google is responsible for just under 65% of the US Search Engine Market Share alone. It is a clear and dominant leader at this point in time. However, reports show that Google's usage over the last six months has been consecutively dropping by 1% whilst Bing's usage has been increasing by an impressive 3% each month.
Bing powered searches have now crossed the 30% mark in the US, which may not seem like much but it is the rate of growth that is significant. In March 2011 Bing represented less than 15% of searches, so to break 30% by August is quite impressive. If Bing's growth continues at this rate then it could give Google a real run for its money in 2012. If Bing's growth increases and Google's decline steepens then Bing could theoretically overtake Google by January.
As one of the leading SEO Phoenix companies, Dynamic Search understand that it is imperative to pay close attention to the rise of Bing. Bing's close affiliation with Yahoo and the world's leading social networking site Facebook is also something worth paying close attention to (Facebook 'likes' now directly influence search engine ranking on Bing). Bing
If Bing can successfully challenge Google's crown of dominance then will be significant repercussions for SEO. Bing is gaining importance in SEO because it is so much easier to optimize. Where Google optimization works largely through back-links, Bing works more by what is on the page. The next twelve months will be a very interesting time for SEO and Dynamic Search will be at the forefront of any important developments.
