Véronica Barcellona’s acrylic and oil paintings on canvas show the enthralling results of an artist’s experimentation with surface, message and symbolism. Crisp, clean lines delineate color fields and shapes; Barcellona’s monumental canvases feature influences from Constructivism and Op art. Occasionally the artist adopts the use of found objects and mixed media to assemble totem-like images with neo-primitive inclinations; she is particularly keen on the infinitely variable materiality of paper, clay, cardboard, metal and tissue paper. ‘Art is shared, not private property,’ she states, expecting that her viewer be an active agent when interpreting her work. Citing Kandinsky, Klimt, Mondrian and Klee as important references, Barcellona also names the Italian Renaissance and Greek mythology as highly influential to her practice.
Véronica Barcellona was born 1970 in Belgium and is of Italian nationality. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at St. Luke Mons from 1990-1992 and currently lives and works in Belgium.
