Morning Sun Exposure Less Likely to Cause Skin Cancer

A new study by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers suggests that the timing of UV radiation exposure is related to rates of skin cancer—and that for humans, morning exposure is less damaging than afternoon exposure.

Mice exposed to UV radiation in the morning had an increased risk of skin cancer by 500 percent. Because mice and humans have opposite circadian clocks and repair their bodies at different times, their most vulnerable times to UV exposure are opposite each other, say the researchers. The team will next measure the DNA repair rates of human volunteers to confirm their hypothesis. (Keep slathering on that sunscreen in the AM in the meantime.)

When are you most often exposed to the sun? Do you take more precautions at certain times than others?
