Thermage skin treatment by Dr Rita Rakus
WHAT IS IT?
A skin-tightening treatment using heat. Radio-frequency waves are delivered to the skin and the underlying tissue of the face using a device which is cooled before, during and after treatment to protect your skin and make the process more comfortable. This controlled amount of RF energy heats collagen in the skin, which causes it to contract immediately, thereby producing a tightening result. Overtime, new and re-modelled collagen is produced to diminish signs of sagging and wrinkling.
HISTORY
The company, Thermage Inc of California, was founded in 1995 by Dr Edward W Knowlton, who invented the ThermaCool device (used in Thermage treatment). This device was US FDA-approved in 2002 and arrived in the UK in 2004.
RECOVERY TIME
The procedure is quick and there's no real recovery time. You could go to a party straight afterwards.
GOOD FOR
Loose skin on the face and neck, crow's feet, smokers' lines, acne scars. It can lift the brow slightly and is best for ages 35 upwards to treat early facial laxity. It can also help prevent signs of ageing.
RISKS
Side effects can include swelling and bumps that eventually disappear. More serious side effects can include scarring, skin dimpling, asymmetries, arid skin contraction. Discuss with your doctor.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Some tightening may be seen immediately, with further improvement in 2-4 months. Results are variable. Effects may last two years or longer.
COST
From around £ 1,500-£2,000 per area, per treatment.
