Tummy tightening is a new, non-invasive alternative to tummy tucks and a far less messy option.
New to this country, tummy tightening is a process that uses radio frequency energy in a treatment called Thermage, which has previously only been used on the face. It may be a godsend for those who want to tighten and gently lift the skin in the stomach area. It's ideal for those suffering from middle-aged spread, or when sit-ups have little effect, or when you don't even want to do sit-ups. 'Radio frequency energy used on the body is a big trend in beauty treatment. It enables you to tighten up unwanted or sagging skin: says Dr Nick Lowe. 'This year for the first time the method is being used on the stomach.' Thermage contours the abdomen by tightening existing collagen and stimulating new collagen growth. Radio frequency is delivered through a wand-like machine arm that produces energy below the surface of the skin, heating up the collagen under the skin so that it instantly firms up. Done in a single treatment which takes an hour, the effect can last for years.
'The technology is fantastic,' agrees Dr Rita Rakus. 'You see and feel the effects after one session, so it's a revolutionary and easy way to get a good-looking stomach. It will be as big as Muscle relaxing injection.' Always consult a registered practitioner. If you spot a friend with a bright red face when they've been nowhere near the sun, chances are they've been Fraxelled.
Fraxel is a new face-resurfacing laser treatment that is a favourite with Americans. It is being rolled out in London clinics in a month's time. It's a non-invasive treatment that resurfaces the face, tightens the skin and eliminates age spots and skin discolouration: in other words, it's a facial multifixer. After a few sessions of Fraxel, the skin is reportedly smooth and resurfaced, with age spots and freckles evened out, but in the short term patients have a tell-tale, bright red face, a side effect that lasts 24 hours. The technique works by retouching the skin with thousands of microscopic laser spots that concentrate on a tiny section of the face at a time. 'It's like having a big fat pen dragged over your face,' said one user after her first session. Fraxel likens it to 'retouching a picture pixel by pixel', it's so accurate. 'Fraxel is a second chance for your skin, if it's been damaged by the sun, for instance' says cosmetic doctor Dr Rita Rakus.
'Less advanced lasers used to take off about 20 per cent of the top layer each time. It wasn't possible to use them on the face, neck and chest without stripping them, but Fraxel is a new type of laser. It gives you new skin. I'm from Australia so I have sun damage. I couldn't wear evening dresses that revealed my decolletage until I had Fraxel' says Dr Rita Rakus (+44 (0)20 7460 7324)
