Coal scarcity in Maharashtra has affected the state in drastic ways. Thermal power plants are unable to produce a sufficient amount of steam needed to generate electricity. From private companies to the common man, everyone is suffering from power cuts. Many factors contribute to the coal shortage in the state such as the low supply of coal by the local government, coal mafias, etc. To know more about this severe issue which has become the topic of concern in the recent political and national scenario, watch Reportaaz at 10 am and 8:30 pm on Sunday, 20th November only on IBN-Lokmat.
Maharashtra is in the middle of a gigantic power crisis mainly because of heightened shortage of coal which is vital for the thermal power plants in India. The power supply situation in Maharashtra is slowly returning to normalcy. The latest power in the grid was at 12,500 MW higher than the mark of 11,000 MW when the crisis begun. The rise of 1,500 MW has given a big aid to the villages in the State, which have suffered the most due to the shortage. Fingers are being raised on a lot of people and institutions. Some blame it on the state government, while the state government blames it on the Coal India Limited (CIL). People also believe that the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd (MahaGenco) and not the CIL is the one at fault. They feel the main reason for the crisis is because of poor management and lack of planning by MahaGenco. In the past few days the Maha Genco has blamed the CIL for the shortage due to the poor quality of coal supplied by the Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a subsidiary of the CIL. This has created a lot of disarray for private companies. For e.g. Reliance Power has suffered immensely due to the decline in power generation. Coal mafia is one of the various dire agents that have contributed to the acuteness in coal with illegal seizure of large quantities of coal in their clutches.
The whole turmoil of the power and coal supply is very confusing as well as gloomy for the common man. Similarly the private industries and thermal power plants suffering from the fuel shortage have brought many questions in the limelight about this issue.
Know more about this national issue of coal and power famine which has swept India with surprise only on Reportaaz at 10 am and 8:30 pm on Sunday, 20th November on IBN-Lokmat
