The Interactive Health and Safety Company (iHasco), one of the UK’s fastest growing suppliers of health and safety training programmes, released their latest title Slips, Trips and Falls in September. It’s the 5th title in their Health and Safety series – great as an all-round training programme, but the training is perfect to help prevent accidents in the workplace at Christmas.
Christmas is just around the corner and it’s not only in the home that we prepare for this very festive season by putting up Christmas trees and decorations, but often in the workplace too. Preparing for Christmas is certainly a fun activity, but safety must not be forgotten - slips, trips and falls prevention training is particularly valuable at this time of year.
Managing Director of iHasco, Bradley Worsfold said “Simple safety tips may seem obvious but are often ignored in the rush to get things done at this busy time of year and many accidents are caused by using the wrong, or broken equipment, or simply just not thinking ahead. Our training aims to encourage best practice at all times of the year, but the advice in the Slips, Trips and Falls prevention training programme is very relevant over the Christmas period”.
The programme includes a full section about using ladders and stepladders, highlighting the importance of using the correct equipment, checking the safety of the equipment, its use, its positioning and the competence of the user. The training also contains a section about preventing tripping, which is all about avoiding creating obstructions and watching out for trip hazards.
Mr Worsfold says “When putting up the Christmas decorations, the proper equipment should be used - don’t use a chair to stand on, especially NOT a swivel chair – it’s the wrong equipment. A step, a stepladder or a full sized ladder should be used if it’s needed. Any equipment used must be checked for damage and care must be taken to set equipment up properly and in a safe place, where its not going to be a danger to others. Anyone using a ladder or step-ladder should know how to use it, and know all the do’s and don’ts - for example don’t lean – many people end up in hospital after reaching too far to get the fairy on the top of the tree!
And when considering where to put the Christmas Tree - care should be taken to place it in such a way that it is not blocking fire exits and so that it isn’t a trip hazard – don’t put it on a blind corner or on a stairway. Be careful to make sure the power cable is not a trip hazard - place the tree as near as possible to a power socket, so the cable doesn’t have to stretch too far. And if there are presents, the gifts should be tidily placed under the tree, not spreading out and becoming trip hazards too.”
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) (http://www.rospa.com/news/releases/detail/default.aspx?id=931) have a wealth of Christmas Safety Tips aimed at home rather than the workplace, but the basic safety principles are the same – the importance of forward thinking and not taking risks.
