Anybody who is looking to become an occupational therapist would first have to study the relevant course at one of the many occupational therapy schools available around the world. Your job as an occupational therapist involves helping disadvantaged people manage to continue doing the things they enjoy doing, or would like to do.
Occupational therapy is a job that serves the community in a large way, one that helps people in a very real way on a daily basis.
Occupational therapy is the practise of helping individuals who are ailed by physical and mental disabilities, to continue doing some of the things they would enjoy doing were it not for this disability.
This can be anything from sport, shopping or something as simple as writing or knitting. Occupational therapists work in a variety of settings; from the hospital, to community groups or even in the patient’s home.
Because of the delicate nature of the job, occupational therapists have to be extremely qualified. This job can be physically, emotionally and mentally demanding, and patients will usually be placing a large amount of trust in your hands. For them, therapy is normally stepping far out of their comfort zones in order to reach the goal that is recovery.
You will not only have to understand the physical aspects of rehabilitation, but you will have to put a lot of work into the mental side of it too, which means motivating your patient in adequate amounts for them to stick to their rehabilitation program.
so it’s important that you as an occupational therapist have the necessary skills to be able to do the job adequately.
Occupational therapy schools offer courses that can help you become adequately prepared for this job. The courses are typically 3 years of study. Two of the years will be spent studying the theoretical aspects of occupational therapy; things such as behavioural science and the various different types of occupational therapy.
The other year of your study will comprise of largely practical work; you will be experiencing the different types of occupational therapy and getting a more hands on feel of the job. During this work experience year, you will be entrusted with your own group of individuals to take care of (although this will be under the supervision of qualified occupational therapists)
There are many occupational therapy schools out there that can adequately prepare you for a career in this field. Patients put a lot of emotional and physical trust into their therapists, and you would have to be prepared to justify that trust.
Occupational therapists work in a very complicated and delicate environment. You have to know the right things to say, know the right things to do, and believe in somebody when they are struggling to believe in themselves. It’s a job that requires a lot of patience, but one that is well appreciated. You would be helping your community, and helping somebody who might have given up on a daily basis.
