A survey has revealed that over 70% of online gamblers find bookies offers "too confusing" and "too hard to understand".
The survey, carried out by Free Bet Bookmaker, an independent bookmaker review site, found that users often failed to understand the special terms and conditions laid out by bookies for their promotional offers, and very few even took advantage.
Free Bet Bookmaker MD, Gareth Cartman, commented that "punters have to read the fine print, and translate it into real English. That's the trick of the bookmakers, to lure people in with something that appears to be common sense, but in truth is quite tricky."
"For example, there are bookmakers whose offer states £200 of free bets, but you have to spend nearly £1000 just to access those free bets - in some cases you have to bet even more, on multiple bets - i.e. both Arsenal and Liverpool to win, for example - in order to be able to withdraw the money."
"Clearly the bookmakers are protecting themselves from losses, but punters need to be made aware that there are special terms and conditions out there which muddy the waters."
Bookmakers are forced by law to make the terms and conditions clear to consumers when signing up, but this survey underlines the fact that while they may be clear, they most certainly are not clear enough.
