Doctors Look Beyond The West For Their Own Health
A majority of doctors and nurses are using complementary and alternative medicine to achieve wellness. One manufacturer of vitamins for boosting the immune system has taken the lead by providing two immune boosting supplements that combine the Western science these healthcare workers are accustomed to with the integrative medicine they are looking for.

A surprising number of doctors are using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in response to a growing cultural shift that focuses less on illness and more on prevention. A whopping 83 percent of nurses and doctors used CAM, according to a study published in Health Services Research. That's 20 percentage points higher than the general population.
Despite being educated in Western medicine with its focus on the treatment of illness, doctors and nurses are turning to nontraditional approaches that focus on wellness. Concentrating on methods, such as herbalism and acupuncture, that seek to promote health and happiness, these doctors and nurses are opting for a preventative approach to illness.
Doctors and nurses are responding to a cultural shift that has been growing since the 1970s. This increasing respect for CAM culminated when Prevention magazine announced its first-ever Integrative Medicine Awards in 2011. The recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Andrew Weil, received recognition as an early champion of integrative medicine. While majoring in botany at Harvard during the early 1960s, Dr. Weil became interested in the medicinal properties of plants. Dr. Weil's interest didn't catch on for decades, despite, as Dr. Chun-Su Yuan of the University of Chicago points outs, 50 percent of our Western medications are botanically based.
The medical community is now acknowledging the health-promoting properties of herbs and other plants thanks to numerous scientific studies. The Journal of Family Practice published the results of several studies on the herb Pelargonium sidoides, also known as Umckaloao.1 These studies found compelling evidence that Umckaloabo eases cold symptoms when taken at the first sign of a cold. Ginger, another herb used medicinally, received scientific recognition when The National Institutes of Health published a study on its website that concluded that ginger is effective for reducing nausea and vomiting. 2 While doctors and nurses might be unlikely proponents of herbalism and alternative medicine, the industry that would seem most inclined to combine Western science with integrative medicine—the supplement industry—has been slow to offer a comprehensive immune boosting enhancer. Most manufacturers offer immune boosting supplements that focus on one or two herbs, while ignoring important antioxidants such as vitamin C and selenium.
One forward thinking company, PURx Health, is committed to filling this "integrative supplement" void. PURx Health is rolling out two cutting-edge immune boosting supplements that combine scientifically proven herbs like Umckaloabo and ginger with essential antioxidants for comprehensive immune system support. PURx Immune and PURx Rebound each combine twenty antioxidants, vitamins and herbs to provide extensive immune system support.
With their long hours, stress and on-the-go diets, doctors and nurses earned a distinction for being an unhealthy bunch. It seems that they are looking to turn their unwell ways around and are looking beyond Western medicine to do so. Luckily, at least one manufacturer of natural immune system boosters has recognized what these healthcare workers now know: herbs combined with vitamins, antioxidants and Western science make an unbeatable combination to boost the immune system.
