40 Years of Some of The Best Villas From Palmer & Parker
December 2011 marks 40 years since UK specialist tour operator Palmer & Parker Holidays printed its first brochure offering holidays in some of the finest villas in some of the best locations in Europe and the Caribbean.

In those four decades the formula has changed little: the villas are a select few, all with private pools, chosen from the many visited each year, and the service is very personal and responsive to specific requirements of customers.
“We give very good advice, and people do appreciate that,”
says Edward Palmer, one of the original partners in 1971.
“Staff visit the villas regularly and our published descriptions are short on hyperbole and long on information: we hardly ever use vague words like ‘luxury’ and gushing descriptions are not what we are about. We like to make sure that people are getting exactly what they want and will go far out of our way to achieve that. And we always answer the phone within 15 seconds.”
The Palmer & Parker brochure became known as the ‘Blue Book’ and quickly became famous in the UK travel industry for its production quality and pictures. In the late 70s Palmer & Parker’s Marbella programme was introduced and in the early 80s the first houses in the South of France appeared. The customer base is loyal and enthusiastic with some families going back three generations as regulars.
Of course, villa holidays in 1971 were quite different to 2011, both in terms of infrastructure and what was on offer: in 1971 destinations such as the Algarve had yet to be much affected by mass tourism. There was only one flight a week from London and driving once there was a challenge compared to now.
“One of the main problems for visitors was animals walking on the main road: now the whole Algarve is linked by a super motorway. A lot has changed and villas have improved greatly but the people are still charming and welcoming... The villas on offer these days are sensational compared to 40 years ago but the knowledgeable approach is what keeps people coming back.”
