The Information Health and Safety Company (iHasco) nearly doubled their target of 100,000 training courses last year, beating the usual seasonal dip in business.
Over 186,500 health and safety courses were completed in 2011, and although the number of training requests usually drops towards the end of the year, the end of the year saw a 30% increase in business for iHasco when compared to 2010.
Health and safety training is a legal requirement and the upward trend at iHasco is attributed to a combination of factors; the introduction in September of the new title Slips, Trips and Falls, the implementation of a new design and upgraded website and a growing interest in iHasco products. These products include courses in Fire Awareness in the Workplace, Fire Warden Training, Manual Handling, Display Screen Equipment and the new Slips, Trips and Falls prevention programme.
Bradley Worsfold, Managing Director of iHasco, said:
“The requests for Fire Safety training remained steady but we saw a notable increase in Manual Handling training; and 2012 looks to be starting well too. Each of our training programmes is designed to have the same look, high quality and style and uses clearly written and spoken English. The training incorporates a stylish mix of video, animation, graphics and presenter-led information and is designed to be engaging – it’s got to be easily digested and retained, otherwise it’s not done its job! Maybe that’s the secret of our success.”
Most company health and safety managers’ thoughts turn to training at some time each year and the first few months of a new year is an ideal time to ensure all staff have up-to-date training. It will also mean one less thing to get done over the rest of 2012.
Looking at the latest illness, accident and injury statistics recorded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) it’s clear that good health and safety training is vital to counter the high number of days off work each year across all sectors and all areas of the country. Last year’s statistics (2010/2011) recorded 1.2 million people suffering from ill health they thought was work related - an estimated 26.4 million working days lost due to work-related illness and injury; and, of these, around 2 million attributed to poor manual handling and slips, trips injuries.
A more detailed look at the statistics shows that manual handling injuries are the most commonly reported kind of accident and musculoskeletal disorders (which include bad backs, necks upper and lower limbs) account for the greatest amount of ill health and around half of all reported absence. And last year slips, trips and falls made up more than half of all reported major injuries and almost a third of over-3-day injuries.
Manual handling and slips and trips training is essential for everyone. And iHasco is so confident that their training is perfect to keep staff up-to-date and help combat these problems that they are offering free trials of their training programs.
Manual Handling in the Workplace includes a step-by-step guide to lifting and lowering properly to and from the floor or table height and emphasizes the importance of planning a route and not taking on something that’s too heavy or too dangerous.
Slips, Trips and Falls concentrates primarily on preventing slipping and tripping, looking at common causes and simple solutions and emphasizing the importance of employees taking responsibility - dealing with problems and avoiding creating hazards themselves. The training includes a full section about using ladders and stepladders, highlighting the importance of using the correct equipment, checking the safety of the equipment, its use, its positioning and the competence of the user.
