People with obstructive sleep apnoea are more likely to stick to prescribed treatment when a partner or parent is involved with their treatment, the medical journal, ScienceDaily, reported this week.
Does your partner suffer from breathing difficulties at night due to sleep apnoea, or have they been advised to use a sleep apnoea oximeter or continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP) as part of their routine? According to a team of sleep researchers at Penn State College of Medicine in the United States, family and partners can play a key role in helping sleep apneoa sufferers to manage their conditions and stick to prescribed medication or recommended treatment plans.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is defined by the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association as “the cessation of airflow during sleep preventing air from entering the lungs caused by an obstruction.”
If breathing is stopped for more than around ten seconds, the body will automatically wake itself up with a snort or a loud snore. For this reason, it is usually the sleeping partner, or family and friends, who will be the first to notice if there is a problem.
If you suspect you or your partner may be a sufferer, a sleep apnoea oximeter (available as a fingertip oximeter), or home oximetry kit, can be used to help diagnose sleep apnoea. If you have concerns about whether you or your partner suffer from sleep apnoea, a simple oximeter sensor can be used to test levels of oxygen in the blood at night. Sleep apnoea sufferers normally have much lower oxygen levels in their blood due to the restricted airflow.
Oximeter sensors are also available for use on babies and children. Paediatric oximeters and infant oximeters can be used to monitor oxygen levels in young children at night, if there are any concerns about the likelihood that a child may be suffering from serious breathing problems, such as nighttime asthma.
People with asthma often suffer from nighttime coughing, wheezing and breathlessness that disturb their sleep. Asthma is often worse at night, as it can be caused by a reaction to allergens such as dust mites, which can exist in high numbers in bedding and soft toys. If your child sufferers from asthma and their symptoms are worse at night, using an oximeter sensor to monitor their oxygen levels can bring parents peace of mind at night.
Healthcare for All can provide information and advice about the use of oximeter sensors, infant oximeters, paediatric oximeters and sleep apnoea oximeters, in diagnosing and monitoring sleep apnoea sufferers and those with other breathing problems at night.
