A restaurant in Bishop’s Stortford, just north of London has been forced to take down the canopies that were on their rooftop, and which cost them a total of £10,000.
Subsequently, three staff has ended up losing their jobs because of the decision made by the council. Just over a year after a lengthy legal battle with the council about the canopies the bar and restaurant, Host has lost their battle and have been forced to take down the parasols on the balcony of the iconic Corn Exchange building.
Speaking about the decision, Simon Cottam, the owner of the bar who has previously spoken out about the local council’s decision to crack down on ‘unauthorised’ entrance canopies and other kinds of canopies and parasol’s which many local restaurants and bars use, has said that due to this decision his business now faces a very uncertain future.
In 2009 when he put up the canopies the local council ordered him to take them down and to apply for retrospective planning permission which, once they received it; they rejected it. After this, Mr Cottam appealed to Government inspectors and aside from the support he got from the town’s Civic Federation his case was thrown out in December 2010 and he was given a year to remove the canopies, along with some glass partitions which cost £6,000.
Speaking about what the loss of the canopies means for the business, Mr Cottam said: “There isn’t really anything we can do now – we just have to rely on the weather, which isn’t a good position to be in. It’s difficult to quantify the impact it’ll have because it depends a lot on the time of year. Right now the terrace probably brings in very little of our revenue, but in summer that could be maybe 20 or 25 per cent. It’s fine if the sun’s out, but if it starts raining people will have nothing to do but to leave.”
If you have a restaurant, or maybe you need something for your other business, such as some canopies to go outside, then you should pay a visit to Park Street Furnishing.
