Geothermal heat pumps use the warmth and coolness of the underground earth to heat AND cool the home. Even climates with extreme winters and summers maintain an underground temperature that is close to constant, unlike air temperatures. Geothermal heating pumps take advantage of that to use constant temperature to heat AND cool homes. Some geothermal systems also heat water for the home.
Energy Efficiency
Geothermal heat pumps outweigh air-sourced heating systems in energy efficiency, using between 25 and 50 percent less electricity. Average ground temperatures a few feet below the surface range from about 45 degrees to 75 degrees year round depending on region. These constant temperatures allow the geothermal heat pump to run more efficiently. This also means your utility bills will remain more constant because you won't have the seasonal changes in electric usage. Air-sourced systems deal with wide ranges of air temperatures, forcing them to work hard to heat or cool outside air. Smaller Units
The inside unit for the geothermal heat pump is usually smaller than traditional boilers, furnaces and other heating sources. You also don't have any outside components like a traditional central air system. This means you won't deal with the noise of the unit running when you're trying to enjoy the outdoors. You also don't have to worry about damage to units that are exposed to the elements or vandals. Even if you aren't building a new home, the geothermal heating system can be retrofitted for an older home.
Durability and Convenience
The geothermal heating pumps generally last a long time. This is mainly due to fewer mechanical parts. The underground pipes can easily last 50 years, while the interior pump will last 20 or more years. Warranties generally cover the parts of the heating pump for those lengths of time. In addition to their durability, they require little maintenance and geothermal systems have a low impact on the environment. The system is much quieter than a normal heating system and eliminates the usual loud cycles of air that a furnace or central air unit delivers when it runs.
