Sweet Counter have once again produced original, colourful products to teach maths in a fun, creative and hands on way, this time specifically targeting boys.
Little boys’ interests are notoriously difficult to capture and retain, but this will not be the case with Sweet Counter’s range of exciting teaching materials for the classroom, playground or home. Our photocopiable worksheets and wall resources include Footie Number Facts, Dinosaur Families, X-Planes and the Monster Number Line, all of which make maths enjoyable with fun themes and bright colours.
The world is football crazy and boys aged 4 to 8 will instantly relate to the colourful football strips displaying numbers 0 to 10 in our Footie Number Facts resource. The shorts match the shirts to make 10, and the reverse side of both also make 10. The children can draw their own action footballers and display their own calculations underneath. The set is not just restricted to facts to 10, as both shirts and shorts could display the same number, so displaying doubles. The order of number, multiplication, and mental maths are brought alive with this set.
Dinosaurs have long been a favourite with all children and this simple set of colourful dinosaurs marked 0 to 20 can again be used for multiple mathematical concepts. There are 6 families of 4, and each family is marked with numbers to make 10, 20 and 30 (6 and 4 making 10, 16 and 4 or 6 and 14 making 20, and 16 and 14 making 30). Place them in order, play happy families and make sums galore as any dinosaurs can be added or the difference found.
X-Planes can ‘explain’ all sorts of concepts in a fun way. These great images of planes and jets have two circles; one on each wing. One circle displays the number 0 to 10, whilst the other circle is left blank. Using dry wipe pens you can create an infinite number of questions and activities.
Last but not least are our Monster Number Lines. These cute and colourful monster faces display a number line from 1 to 100 and are designed so that the colourings clearly show the 0 to 9 repeat pattern. Consequently we have 1,11,21,31,41,etc written underneath the face of the same friendly blue monster, and numbers ending in 2 written underneath a pink monster. Each set of 10 is on a strip so that the display can be a number line to 30, 40, 50 etc, in a horizontal formation or vertical, so the tens pattern is clearly highlighted.
And that’s not all. Sweet Counter, as part of their Playground Pictures range, have a huge range of other learning resources which also typically suit boys aged between 4 and 8 years. Themes include rockets, cars and aliens. And girls aren’t forgotten. Why not order some adorable Bunnies featuring the numbers 1 to 10, a Multiplication Rainbow or Sum Flowers? All aim to improve numeracy in primary school aged girls.
Other Sweet Counter products focus on literacy skills, foreign languages, telling the time and classroom values. All classroom resources are double laminated and can be used with dry wipe pens to ‘write on and wipe off’’, and all sets come with photocopiable workbooks and masters which can be used inside the classroom or at home.
In addition to Sweet Counter indoor resources why not consider Playground Pictures; external learning resources which can be left outdoors all year, transforming any garden or playground into a teaching, learning and assessment zone.
Teachers and parents can visit the Sweet Counter website, www.sweetcounter.co.uk, to see the full range of teaching materials available.
