Cataract
A cataract is an eye disease. In cataract normal clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque, which creates vision distortion. Our eye lens focuses light onto the back of the eye, which is called as retina, so that images appear clear and without distortion. In cataract the clouding of this lens during cataract formation distorts the eye vision. Cataract formation is a gradual process of normal aging but it can occasionally develop rapidly. Generally cataract affects both eyes, but many a times cataract is developed in one eye also. Majority Cataracts affect the old people known as adult cataract. But sometimes it may seen in Childhood also called as pediatric cataract.
Cause of Cataract
Cataract formation is created due to aging process. The reason is unknown but the major reason is changes in the protein structures within the lens that occur over many years and make the lens so cloudy. In rare cases, it may found at birth or in some children in their childhood due to hereditary enzyme defects or due to many other genetic disease or systemic congenital infections cause cataract in children known as pediatric cataract. Some of the other reasons like severe trauma to the eye and eye surgery or intraocular inflammation can also be the cause of cataracts to develop more rapidly. There are many other causes for early cataracts formations are excessive ultraviolet light exposure, diabetes, exposure to ionizing radiation, smoking, and the use of certain medications like oral, topical, or inhaled steroids etc can raise cataracts.
Cataracts typically develop slowly over a period of years time in old age and are not so painful or not show any serious symptoms like any eye redness or other symptoms unless it is extremely advanced. Prompt and painful changes in eye vision raise suspicion for other eye diseases and should be diagnosis by an ophthalmologist.
Types of Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of your eye and in most cases eye surgeon in eye hospital replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is used to treat a cataract - the clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye. There are different types of cataract surgery like the most common form of cataract surgery today involves a process called phacoemulsification. With the help of an operating electronic microscope, your eye care expert will make a very small incision in the eye surface or near the cornea. A thin ultrasound probe is inserted into the eye and uses ultrasonic vibrations to dissolve the clouded lens. These tiny fragmented lens pieces are then suctioned out through the same ultrasound probe. On removal of cataract, an artificial lens is placed into the thin capsular bag that the cataract previously occupied. This lens is essential to help your eye focus after surgery. This modern method of cataract surgery hardly takes 30 minutes and usually requires only minimal sedation. Extra capsular cataract surgery is used for very advanced cataracts where the lens is too dense to phacoemulsify into fragments.
Intracapsular cataract surgery requires larger wound than extra capsular surgery to remove the entire lens and the surrounding capsule together. This method is rarely used today but can still be useful in cases of significant trauma. Raghudeep eye Hospital provides the world class Cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment and Cornea treatment at Ahmedabad.
