He may be better known for trains and airlines but Sir Richard Branson is making inroads in to timepieces by becoming an ambassador for Bulova Accutron Watches.
A new watch, recently premiered at the company’s New York City offices, will be part of a special issue of only 500 pieces commemorating the internationally known businessman. Each Swiss-made watch will be numbered on the caseback and on the accompanying certificate of authenticity.
Made from titanium and sporting a black alligator strap, this classic 21-jewelled self-winding mechanical movement is certified by the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC). The new watch includes a 24-hour GMT second time zone reading on the dial. Measuring 46mm, the watch is water resistant to 100 metres.
Sir Richard has donated the proceeds from his work as ambassador for Bulova Accutron Watches to Virgin Unite a non-profit foundation created to tackle the world's social and environmental problems. Bulova Accutron Watches will also donate a portion of the purchase price of the special editions to charity.
The pioneering spirit behind his foundation of the Virgin Group makes his company an easy fit with one of the most technologically progressive watchmakers. Opening the company at only 20 years old, he has since grown to be one of the world's most recognised and respected innovators.
By 2012, Sir Richard has built his business into more than 300 branded companies operating in 30 countries worldwide.
On a more personal note, he is known for his love of extreme sports and has made many attempts at traveling around the world by Hot Air balloon. He joins a long tradition of people, such as Charles Lindbergh who have been associated with both aviation adventure and the timepiece brand.
Since becoming an ambassador for the brand in March 2011, the entrepreneur had not had his own timepiece amongst the range. The watch will be available in a specially crafted limited edition case, and is scheduled for release in the autumn of 2012 at a projected retail price of around £2,500.
