One of the quintessentially British spring sights is a carpet of blooming bluebells. And the Woodland Trust, in partnership with the Forestry Commission, National Trust, Wildlife Trusts and RSPB, are encouraging the public to use Visitwoods.org.uk to find their nearest bluebell wood during March, April and May. The elusive native bluebell is mainly found in ancient woodland, so if you do see them you know you are in one of our rarest habitats - only 2% of the UK is covered by ancient woodland, our equivalent of the rainforest.
VisitWoods.org.uk hosts the largest database of bluebell woods open for visitors. With over 1,000 bluebell woods so far, the organisations involved are hoping the public will help them identify even more. Anyone who has visited a bluebell wood can tick the bluebell icon against that wood on the website so even more people can enjoy this stunning annual display.
With the UK being home to such a small proportion of woodland, around a quarter of the European equivalent, VisitWoods.org.uk specifically aims to make finding and visiting woods as fun and easy as possible, particularly for families, older people and those with disabilities. The website features search criteria including wheelchair access, car parks and toilet facilities as well as the bluebell icon to indicate woods known for their bluebell cover in spring.
For planning a great day out, VisitWoods.org.uk also contains information and free activities to keep people occupied in the woods. From woodland art to spotter sheets and foraging tips there's plenty to keep families entertained. You can find your nearest woods simply by using a postcode or place name to search the interactive website.
