Kansas based general contractor, Web Contracting Inc. has been experiencing a sudden spurt of interest in home improvement and remodeling projects, thanks to the recession.
Even with the low interest rates on mortgages, not many are keen on buying a house, because of the prevailing uncertainty. Besides, it is getting very difficult to qualify for a mortgage. As for those planning to replace their old homes for a bigger or better house; a lot many people are realizing that it is better to renovate and remodel than to sell their existing homes, as they often sell less than their actual worth.
"Statistics too seem to be favoring us. The National Association of Home Builders' has quoted that its remodeling market index has hit its highest level in 5 years. In some places, the demand for remodeling projects has tripled," says a spokesperson for Web Contracting Inc. The general contractor has been in the construction contract business for almost a decade and specializes in hospital construction, and other residential projects.
People who are now selling homes are often doing it because of necessity, and are even willing to accept 30 % less than what the house is worth. But not everyone is in a hurry to sell. "Since people aren't really moving anywhere soon, they prefer to refurbish their house. They find it a lot cheaper to add on an extra dishwasher, or an extra sink, or go for European styled cabinets, than to go for long term mortgage loans. The finance for these is easily found in local and regional banks and other credit societies. And even those who are selling want to renovate, so that it helps them sell at a better rate," adds the spokesperson.
