Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on a recent study that ties white rice and an increased risk of diabetes.
A study published on Friday in the journal BMJ has made the association between white rice and a heightened chance of getting Type 2 diabetes.
Bruce Neal, Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, Australia, wrote an editorial that ran alongside the study, and says the research should be taken in context."Diet-related ill health is now widely believed to be the leading cause of chronic disease around the world, and more work needs to be done to find ways to prevent and treat such diseases”.
Neal also says that the study is merely proving an association, not a direct link, and that more work is needed to substantiate the idea.
Dr. Victor Marchione, an expert in Pulmonary Medicine says that the findings “show promise in the medical community, and that if this simple diet change can mean a lowered risk, then more research should be done as soon as possible.”
For the study, the team examined four sets of research done in China, Japan, Australia and the United States, which comprised of almost 350,000 participants. It was found after the study that the Asian participants were at a heightened risk of Type 2 diabetes owing to their high consumption of white rice. This association was drawn after the Asian participants in the study group were found to be eating up to four servings of rice a day, while those in the other countries studied, had much lower average consumption of white rice.
