The truth about STDs is alarming: Each year, about 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases are transmitted in the U.S.—half of which occur among young adults between ages 15 and 24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
As part of STD Awareness Month—annually observed each April—getSTDtested.com has published an original infographic highlighting this fact and many others about STDs in the U.S.
"Sexually transmitted diseases are a national epidemic, yet no one talks about them. This infographic serves as a visually engaging tool to open discourse around STD testing, education, and prevention," says Tracey Powell, founder of getSTDtested.com.
The facts and figures featured in the infographic emphasize the prevalence of STDs in the U.S., as well as the importance of prevention and STD testing. The CDC recommends routine STD and HIV testing for all sexually active adults at least once a year, with or without symptoms.
"This infographic reminds everyone that, although not always talked about, STDs are a public health priority within the United States. But with increased education about STDs, these infections can be prevented and reduced," adds Powell.
