Coconut Oil Boosts Metabolism Says Natural Health Sherpa
Coconut oil is one of the most well-researched natural fats. Boosting the body’s metabolism is one of the many benefits associated with coconut oil.

Wilmington, NC – Obesity is one of the top health concerns in the US. Coconut oil can help, says one of the leading natural health websites.
"During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high. In 2010, no state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty-six states had a prevalence of 25% or more," according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“When it comes to weight loss, it appears that coconut oil’s medium-chain triglycerides are the very reason it is effective,” observes Natural Health Sherpa.
The website continues: “It turns out that when you eat coconut oil, your body uses it more quickly rather than storing it as body fat. In this way, those medium-chain triglycerides are thermogenic—meaning that they actually speed up your metabolism, burning more calories and giving you more energy.”
Citing a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study from Brazil, Natural Health Sherpa writes:
“Researchers tested the effects of coconut oil on 40 women between the ages of 20 to 40, with clinical abdominal obesity (waist circumference of more than 88 cm). Half of the group received a daily dose of either soybean oil or coconut oil for 12 weeks. Both of the groups were instructed to follow a balanced, low-calorie diet and to walk for 50 minutes each day.
“At the end of the study period, those taking the coconut oil had a statistically greater loss of waist circumference that those taking the soybean oil. The coconut oil users also had a statistically higher level of HDL (good) cholesterol and a lower LDL/HDL ratio than the soybean oil group.
“Both groups enjoyed a decrease in their body mass index (BMI).
“So, those using the coconut oil lost weight, lost inches around their waist, increased their levels of good cholesterol, and improved their bad to good cholesterol ratio. “
There is strong evidence that coconut oil can help decrease weight and waistlines.
Other Health Benefits
Natural Health Sherpa cites a study on virgin coconut oil. In this study involving rats, coconut oil was seen to reduce inflammation, ease pain, and reduce fever. The results, according to the researchers “suggest anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties of virgin coconut oil.”
The Natural Health Sherpa feature on coconut oil shows that it can help in the treatment of candida albicans – “the common cause of diaper rash, vaginitis, thrush, and yeast infections.”
“Researchers concluded that coconut oil might be useful for treating bacteria, fungi, and viruses,” says Natural Health Sherpa summarizing the health benefits of coconut oil apart from weight loss.
Healthy Cooking
As an added benefit, coconut oil can be used in cooking delicious meals. It “is a great option for cooking due to its high smoking point (350°F for unrefined and 450°F for refined). This is a culinary way of saying that you can sauté and bake with coconut oil and not worry about it turning into a trans-fat before your eyes. Plus, coconut oil is very stable. It has a two-year shelf life and won’t turn rancid, even in warm temperatures,” notes Natural Health Sherpa.
When it comes to healthy cooking, Natural Health Sherpa has a list of healthy spices. One of the posts in the health website talks about the benefits of garlic. Another post discusses the many benefits of turmeric. Yet another post talks about the various benefits of ginger.
Natural Health Sherpa provides in-depth, science-based, independent reviews of natural health therapies and remedies that have been proven to be both safe and effective and are backed by good science -- multiple double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized studies. Unfortunately, there are many charlatans making bogus, unfounded claims in the natural health area, so our goal is to separate fact from fiction to pinpoint what actually works.
