Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on research that shows a tie between men who are overweight and men that have an increased risk for prostate cancer recurrence.
Vincent L. Freeman, M.D., presented results of this study at the most recent AACR Annual Meeting 2012, held in Chicago March 31, 2012 to April 4, 2012
Freeman, who is a professor at the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Illinois commented on the results saying, “Men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer and who have excess body weight as indicated by a higher-than-normal body mass index (BMI) have an increased risk for cancer recurrence after treatment.”
Freeman and colleagues examined body mass index of 119 men. The BMI measured the participant’s body weight in relation to their height, and pitted the results against the risk for cancer recurrence based on blood prostate-specific antigen levels and prostate cancer biopsy results.
The results showed that there was significant lifestyle factors connected to prostate cancer that could be used as viable indicators for high-risk cases.
Dr. Victor Marchione, an expert in Pulmonary Medicine, and spokesperson for Bel Marra Health shed some light on the issue as well saying, “the findings in this study are impressive in theory, but the bottom line is they also highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight to reduce prostate cancer risk, as well as all the other factors, too.”
