Health Benefits of Cinnamon: Eating Apple Pie Lowers Blood Sugar Says Natural Health Sherpa

Wilmington, NC – Eating apple pie can actually lower blood sugar levels, says Natural Health Sherpa, as long as it contains cinnamon.
Dr. Richard Anderson, researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was doing conducting a research on the effects of eating apple pie on blood sugar levels. He was surprised to discover that eating apple pie actually lowered the blood sugar levels of his test subjects. Dr. Anderson realized that it was the cinnamon in apple pie that was causing the baffling result.
With further study, Dr. Anderson discovered that cinnamon contains methylhydroxy chalcone polymer (MHCP) – a polyphenol that improves the metabolism of glucose in fat cells twenty times. “It does this by reducing the insulin resistance of fat cells, making their insulin receptors more responsive,” explains Natural Health Sherpa.
Lowering blood sugar levels is just one of the many health benefits of cinnamon. A study published in The Indian Journal of Medical Research in 2000 showed that out of the 69 cinnamon species tested and screened, 16 species were found to be effective in fighting HIV-1 . Four species were seen to effectively fight both HIV-1 and HIV-2. There are also several studies published in various journals that show that different parts of the cinnamon plant (bark, leaves, oils) have antiviral properties. Aside from that, extract from the cinnamon bark called CEppt is shown to inhibit the development of Alzheimer’s disease in mice, according to a study published in 2011.
Type 2 Diabetes
Because of cinnamon’s ability to help lower blood sugar and to help insulin sensitivity in humans, it can be used to help treat type 2 diabetes. “As you can imagine, Dr. Anderson’s accidental discovery unleashed a whole host of studies on the connection between cinnamon, glucose, insulin, and diabetes,” notes Natural Health Sherpa. The most intriguing of these studies are discussed in the Natural Health Sherpa page about cinnamon linked above.
Natural Health Sherpa encourages diabetics to try natural remedies such as cinnamon and Boswellia and to avoid artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose, aspartame and high fructose corn syrup.
