Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on recent research that suggests if significant changes aren’t made, one in five young people will be obese by the year 2020.
According to a new study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, young people in the United States would need to reduce their caloric intake by sixty-four calories a day in order to begin to reduce obesity rates.
Researchers say this reduction could be achieved by decreasing calories or increasing physical activity, or a mixture of both.
Lead author of the study Dr. Y. Claire Wang, MD commented on the findings, saying, “sixty-four calories may not sound like much individually, but it’s quite a consequential number at the population level, and children at greatest risk for obesity face an even larger barrier.”
Researchers are predicting that the average youth will be nearly four pounds heavier than a youth of the same age in 2007-2008, and more than 20% of young people will be obese.
Jim Chiang, CEO of Bel Marra Health says it will take some work, but reaching this goal is doable with consistent effort. He says, “we are aware that young people who are already obese will need larger reductions, so preventing obesity will be easier with this knowledge. The sixty-four calorie a day reduction is doable with the right mind frame, consistency from parents and general public awareness of the problem.”
The research report shows the average difference in the amount of calories young people consume and how many they expend through normal growth, which is called the energy gap. The 64-calorie difference between consumption and expenditure is considered to be the average.
