At New York City's KCNY Plastic Surgery, Dr. Mihye Choi is seeing a significant new trend in breast surgery: more patients inquiring about breast reduction surgery. While breast surgery has traditionally been associated with breast augmentation, Dr. Choi is finding an ever-growing faction of women looking to reduce breast size and fullness.
"In the past, few options existed for women with an overly large or disproportionate chest," explains Dr. Choi. "With today's modern surgical techniques, we're finding that today's woman is doing something about it." Dr. Choi's assertion confirms recent data published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. According to the Society's latest report, there were nearly 113,000 female breast reduction procedures performed in 2011, alone. Compared to the 1997 figure, that indicates a remarkable 136% growth.
Asked to speculate on the popularity of breast reduction surgery, Dr. Choi offered a few suggestions. "For one, overly large breasts are not just a cosmetic issue," explains Dr. Choi. "Rather, they can cause several quality-of-life issues for patients. These can include back pain, shoulder pain and even breathing problems."
"Moreover," reports Dr. Choi, "breast reduction carries a notably high degree of patient satisfaction." This assertion is well-echoed in reviews throughout plastic surgery community site, RealSelf®. Asking its users to report on which plastic surgery procedures were "Worth It," the site assigns each procedure a rating out of 100. Based on recent RealSelf data, breast reduction surgery earned a rare 95% Worth It rating.
Concluding on the measure of breast reduction success, Dr. Choi responded simply, "For us, breast reduction surgery is about making women look better, feel better and become more comfortable in their own skin. That's how we measure success."
About Dr. Choi
Dr. Mihye Choi, a board certified plastic surgeon in Manhattan, is highly respected and well-known. Her practice focuses on face, breast and body plastic surgery, and she has been featured in numerous publications.
Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Choi graduated from University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1987. She completed her general surgery training at Harvard Beth Israel Hospital. This was followed with plastic surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a hand surgery fellowship at NYU Medical Center.
Dr. Choi joined the Faculty at the Institute of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine in 1998. Last year, with Dr. Nolan Karp, she was the Co-Program Director of the NYU sponsored meeting, "Breast Reconstruction: State of the Art."
