A lot has changed since the first luau in 1819 in terms of presentation and the types of foods which are served. And no one knows that better than the Royal Lahaina Resort. The luau is one of the resort's biggest attractions and they spend a lot of time creating a celebration that all of their guests will enjoy. They try to make sure that their luaus are the perfect time for friends and families to come together to enjoy good food and entertainment. They do this whether it's for a birthday or the reception of one of the many Maui weddings they host. Royal Lahaina does this because the luau represents some of the most traditional and deeply rooted values of Hawaiian culture. But to understand that a short background of the luau is necessary.
The first Luau was a landmark occasion because up to that point men and women were not allowed to eat together because of religious customs. These same restrictions also prevented commoners from eating certain types of foods which were completely reserved for royalty. This all changed when King Kamehameha II ended these practices. He threw a feast and invited women and commoners to dine with him. And so began one of the most closely held traditions in Hawaiian history.
The Royal Lahaina Maui hotel and Resort is well aware of the impact and the significance that the luau has on modern Hawaiian culture—and in truth world culture. They do their best to relay this importance to the guests that stay there each year but they've also begun reaching out in new ways as well. Royal Lahaina has recently published an article in various spots, which goes over in great detail the background of luaus. The article is called "You Haven't Been To Hawaii If You Haven't Been To a Luau!" and it charts the history of the luau—from its beginnings to the celebrations often held to this day. One of the topics the article covers is all of the different types of food found at a luau. This section was included to show that while the modern luau has changed much from early days there are still familiar dishes available that are prepared in the classic way.
