The history of the Luau is a long and storied one and it says a lot about Hawaii and its people. A luau is a great feast which showcases many of the different types of authentic Hawaiian cuisine. Before it, men and women were not allowed to dine together due to religious doctrine. In addition to this, there were foods that people of common birth were not allowed to eat—foods reserved solely for royalty. King Kamehameha II ended these practices when he invited commoners of all types to feast with him in what became the very first luau. The first luau was a historic event that paved the way for one of the world's most popular and enduring celebrations.
