A personal review of the Ekeberger Coaching Days in May 2012 by Dr Christine Kaul, a qualified psychologist.

The international coaching forum was again completely sold out. The fact that the event was held just before the Whit weekend did not stop any of this yearÕs fifty attendants from travelling to the far north of Germany. The fifth Ekeberger Coaching Days from 25 to 26 May 2012 saw a gathering of coaches, staff development specialists, academics and young academic talents. Besides several regular guests, there were also once again many new participants who gave interesting talks to underline the broad spectrum covered by coaching.

Host and business coach Uwe Boening (Frankfurt am Main) opened the forum with a stimulating comparison of coaching terms currently in use in communication and relationship offerings on the Internet. His talk was entitled "Business coaching 2.0 or 3.0. On systematising a field". Will our understanding of what are still basic coaching aspects change soon? What do confidentiality, privacy and intimacy mean in this age of Facebook, Parship and discussions on mobile phones in public? The following hours were jam-packed with more than 20 talks, workshops and poster sessions.

Prof. Harald Geissler (Hamburg), who prophesied the imminent saturation of the coaching market should professionals stay true to their current traditional demand paradigm in coaching, marked the start of the guest speakers. He put up highly promising alternatives for discussion, including both his new developments in managerial coaching and "virtual transfer coaching" by phone and online. In the talk that followed, Prof. Reinhard Stelter (Copenhagen) drew a clearly contradictory picture of coaching, inspiring from an entirely different perspective. His concern is not figures and statistics on effectiveness, but values, identity and genuine dialogue.

The problems of bridging the divide between academia and practice were the subjects of the talks by university professors Dr Astrid Schuetz (Bamberg) and Dr Heidi Mueller (Kassel). Prof. Schuetz and co-speaker Anja Limmer reported on exciting advances in the development of the Bamberg Competence Centre for Applied Personnel Psychology. Prof. Mueller opened her talk with a lively introduction, before heading onto the question of potential research fields in practice and for practitioners, her statements backed up by empirical data from co-speaker Silja Kotte.

This year's symposium stood out through two special methodical highlights. These were the two phone interviews with clients that participants were able to follow live, giving them the chance to draw up alternatives for the ongoing approach to one of the problems discussed in the calls. Business coach Brigitte Fritschle (Frankfurt am Main) reported on the current status of the Coaching-Globe.net Internet platform, which has already motivated many users to make contributions in a short time. Top commitment in discussions, a cooperative culture of argumentation and much shared fun were the watchwords again in this coaching forum. The enthralling cabaret performance delivered by Dr Stefan Oefner-Py (Wiesbaden) in his talk deserves special mention. To conclude the series, Prof. Harald Geissler rightly noted that a coaching community is emerging here that is taking a key role in the scene alongside the many coaching associations. The aim of the Ekeberger Coaching Days is to bring together experts from business and academia with experienced practitioners in a mutually appreciative discourse, in this way promoting long-term dialogue, activities and results. The annual Ekeberger Coaching Days, conducted by Boening-Consult, are on their way to becoming a fixed institution in international business coaching.
