Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka comes into the tournament in fantastic form have won back-to-back tour titles in the China Open and the WTA International in Linz.
Serena Williams - seeded number three for the tournament - has not played since winning the US Open title at Flushing Meadows in September. Despite the absence, Williams is still the one to beat in the eyes of many tennis experts.
French Open champion and second seed Maria Sharapova had to withdraw from this event last year due to injury but will hope to challenge with Williams and Azarenka for the title this week. The Russian comes into the event having been beaten convincingly by Azarenka in the China Open in Beijing three weeks ago.
Sharapova told the media this week how much she has been looking forward to the event - "I'm very excited to be back. Unfortunately last year I was a bit injured and wasn't able to play 100%, so it's nice coming in this year knowing I'm ready. I've been here for a little bit - I've spent about five days getting ready and practicing."
Defending champion Petra Kvitová will be seeded sixth for the event and will face Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Sara Errani in the White group in a round robin format.
In the Red group, fifth seed Angelique Kerber from Germany will face Azarenka, Williams and China's Li Na in what promises to be some world-class tennis.
