I had just started working from home, that's when I thought that I was going to treat myself to a brand new desk. I live in a Pre Victorian, Grade II listed building, so I couldn’t just get any old desk. I am by no means a snob, but I have always tried to furnish my house sympathetically, by choosing Regency or Victorian styles wherever possible. I always have lots of friends and clients coming over to the house, I thought a lovely antique desk would create the right impression.
So there it was, I knew exactly what I wanted, I’d seen the antiques programmes on TV often enough. I knew that it was often referred to as a partner’s desk, double pedestal desk with a gold tooled leather top. I was after a dark wood, mahogany was what sprung to mind, and I certainly found it at my local auction room. The final price- it went for over £5000! My bidding stopped long before then.
A little disappointed, by certainly not put off. I already have several reproduction pieces in my house and I have found that most people can’t tell the difference from the real thing. That was the route I was going to take. I found a website called Furniture Warehouse that sold many quality reproduction antique furniture, and what’s more they had exactly the desk that I was after.
I found a reproduction antique pedestal desk that I knew would be perfect for my home office at http://www.furniturewarehouseuk.com/. It was finely crafted and came in many different finishes; the choices were mahogany, yew wood, burr elm, burr walnut and poplar. The desk had no distressed look, but it was polished to a high sheen for durability as well as smartness. From the dovetailed drawers, to the beading on the side of the pedestals you could see the quality of the craftsmanship. For my mahogany desk I chose the green leather as this went so well, but I could have easily chosen burgundy, brown, tan, blue, gold. What I liked most about the desk was that although it looked like a normal writing desk, it was actually designed for the use of a computer, with the top centre drawer concealing a sliding shelf for the keyboard and on the right side instead of a double depth drawer, there was a cupboard to house the CPU unit.
As the desk that I had bought cost considerably less than the one I had seen at the auction room, I felt that I could quite rightly justify buying a leather captains chair also from the same site. It looked so comfortable that I wondered if I would ever leave my new regency desk.
From all the high quality pictures that I had seen on the website with the in depth descriptions, made me absolutely sure that what I was buying was of a high quality. I didn’t have to worry either about getting the desk into my office as it broke down into three separate pieces for delivery. The two pedestals separating from the leather top. As soon as the desk arrived you could certainly see the level of craftsmanship that had gone into reproduction desks, and I felt sure that all the other items of reproduction furniture would be of the same high quality.
I’m certainly glad that I didn’t find what I was looking for at the auction, because the website that I found was certainly a worthwhile find. I have since made a note of all the other furniture items that I am after at a later date. So I will certainly be visiting the website again. In terms of quality and the service I received I was extremely happy and it couldn’t be beaten. So if you are ever after any items of reproduction furniture, then I highly recommend www.furniturewarehouseuk.com.
