According to the Transport Committee Chair Louise Ellman, the Department for Transport has wasted an opportunity to show leadership on road safety.
Ministers have been accused of hiding their responsibilities for improving road safety with a lack of leadership after a rise in road deaths.
The government says it is focusing on reducing road deaths, following statistics showing that in 2010 1,901 people were killed on the roads, an increase of 51 on 2009 and the first increase since 2003. The largest number was among pedestrians where the number of deaths rose to 453.
The number of cyclists and motorcyclists losing their life on the raods fell, whilst the number of drivers and passengers rose to 883 while a total of 25,000 road users were seriously injured or killed.
Road deaths between 2010 and 2011:
-Car occupants: 883 (up 6%)
-Pedestrians: 453 (up 12%)
-Motorcyclists: 362 (down 10%)
-Cyclists: 107 (down 4%)
Among 16 to 27 years olds, road accidents were the main killer and so there have been calls to improve driver training and the condition of the roads.
MrsEllmanstated that she was unhappy with the handling of the committee's concerns by the government and that they wasted an opportunity to demonstrate leadership on road safety.
Road deaths between 2007 AND 2011
-2011: 1,901
-2010: 1,850
-2009: 2,222
-2008: 2,538
- 2007: 2,946
Defensive driver training is essential in helping to tackle road safety for young people, and for passengers, drivers, cyclists and motorists as a whole.
