A recent article looks at the many reasons why patients from the United States are choosing to travel to Mexico for their surgical needs. The cost of a heart operation in the United States is astronomical. There are many good reasons as to why cardiovascular surgery in Mexico is significantly less costly. Further, pricing is compiled in packages so the patient knows in advance exactly what the cost will be. Contrast this to the process in the United States where the patient may continue receiving a variety of bills in the months following a hospital stay or medical procedure.
The article addresses specifically why patients are pursuing surgical treatment in Mexico, which has largely been the result of something as simple as high success rates. Patients are pleased with the care they are getting and the word is spreading. Surgery in Mexico is a very cost-effective option with savings up to 70%. Further, the level of care is equivalent or better to what would cost considerably more in the United States. While lessons in economics might lead one to believe that a lower cost operation in Mexico means less quality care, this is not what is occurring. There are surgeons skilled and specializing in pediatric heart surgery, angioplasty, valve repair, and so on.
