While we typically associate plastic surgery with its popularity among female patients, surgeons today are noting a growing new trend in the world of cosmetic medicine: more men seeking treatment. New York Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Mark Schwartz, explains this new growth and speculates on a few driving forces behind the shift.
"For several years, men have been quietly realizing the benefits of plastic surgery," explains Dr. Schwartz. "Today, we are seeing unprecedented numbers of guys coming in for consultations." Dr. Schwartz's assertion confirms recent data published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. According to the ASPS, men accounted for 9% of all cosmetic procedures performed in 2011, nationwide. That represents a remarkable 6% jump in just one year alone.
Sharing insight into what may be driving this trend, Dr. Schwartz offered this: "Women today are not the only ones who want to look in the mirror and like what they see. Men are just as interested - if not more so - in the way they look. This is especially true in today's competitive job market, where showing up at a client's office or board meeting looking 'tired' or 'worn out' simply isn't an option."
Addressing the unique cosmetic goals of male patients, Dr. Schwartz took a moment to explain his approach: "While almost nobody wants to look 'done,' men especially appreciate more subtle results, particularly when it comes to facial enhancements such as facelifts, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery or BOTOX®. In keeping with this, we tend to adopt a more conservative approach with male patients, enhancing their appearance without compromising their natural, masculine looks."
Asked to speculate on the future of male cosmetic surgery, Dr. Schwartz concluded succinctly: "Gone is the stereotype that plastic surgery is only for women. Going forward, our practice will continue to address the cosmetic needs of male patients, always understanding the utmost need for discretion and the importance of patient-doctor communication."
