According to The Canadian Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 4,000 new cases of oral cancer in 2012, alone. In light of that startling statistic, and understanding the crucial need for early detection, Downtown Calgary Dentist, Dr. Kim Orth, is providing his patients with oral cancer screenings using a device known as VELscope.
"In the past, oral cancer screenings relied primarily on a simple visual examination," explains Dr. Orth. "Today, VELscope allows us to visualize abnormal tissue with better accuracy and in greater detail." Casting a special blue light into the oral cavity, VELscope has been cleared by Health Canada to help detect cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions that might otherwise not be visible to the naked eye.
Quickly becoming one of the most requested services at his Calgary office, Dr. Orth explains some of the patient-side benefits of the screening system. "Patients are embracing VELscope for a few reasons," explains Dr. Orth. "The screening is non-invasive, takes only minutes, and there are no messy dyes or rinses to speak of."
"What's more, VELscope is proving invaluable when it comes to early detection of oral cancer," explains Dr. Orth. This assertion confirms recent findings from a 620-patient study out of the University of Washington. The manufacturers of VELscope reported on this new research, explaining that, "Within a dental school setting, the addition of VELscope to routine clinical examinations resulted in the detection of a number of mucosal abnormalities not detected by the conventional exam."
