It has been reported by the Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland that 25 per cent of women suffer domestic violence. This can be emotional, physical, sexual or financial.
Higher numbers of women in Ireland are seeking help and reporting domestic violence to the authorities although many crimes still go unreported so figures are merely an estimate.
For the last two years, incidents of domestic abuse reported to the authorities have been the highest on record according to PSNI statistics. The number of incidents is rising year on year and in 2010/2011 an incident was reported every 21 minutes each day of the year with victims experiencing on average 35 incidents of domestic violence before they report it or seek help. Constituency staff across Northern Ireland are working in conjunction with Women's Aid to help support victims.

"For the last twenty years I have used and heard the same points/statistics being highlighted time and time again.
"Domestic violence has always happened its not something new so isn't it time all local authority areas recognise and admit this? it isn't an issue that is going to go away, and they should put permanent measures in place, such as resources, funding and intervention in order to address and tackle the issue in a coordinated and robust way, as opposed to inconsistent focus when the issue is topical or highlighted due to a particular case or story hitting the media headlines"
