The deadline for the completion of CPC Driver Training is just over a year away, but it seems that many companies are leaving it until the very last minute
Although figures show that there are many drivers taking up CPC Training, there still seems to be a long way to go to ensure that every licensed driver will have the current Driver Qualification Card in time for the September 10, 2014 which is the deadline.
There is a huge shortfall of days plus over 400,000 drivers who have not yet started the training leaving many freight operators with a lot of work to do.
Progress has been helped by ministers and licensing authorities, and training providers are developing ways in which to spread the cost and inconvenience of helping drivers achieve 35 hours of approved training before the deadline.
Paul Beresford runs Defensive Driver Training. DDT offers defensive and advanced driver training to help keep the roads, and its drivers safe and secure. DDT helps to train company, fleet and personal drivers keeping insurance and repair costs down. He says:
Many of our clients have taken batches of drivers off road for a week at at ime to complete the 35 hours training during times where the company isn't as busy. We can train 15 drivers for five days for £2100 plus VAT and upload fees. That's just £140 per driver for the full course which is manageable for most companies.
Many people believe that if enough drivers ignore it the DSA they will have to extend the deadline and won't be able to enforce penalties as there will be too many drivers to prosecute in total. However, DSA will impose a £1000 fine for both the driver and the operator if they do not have the correct qualification.
In particular, agency drivers are not bothered about the consequences. Ultimately it is the driver's responsibility to obtain the Driver Qualification Card not the employers.
