China is the second largest energy consumer in the world and its energy demand is expected to increase rapidly due to strong industrial growth. To secure its future energy demand, China’s national oil and gas companies have invested in overseas oil and gas assets across all regions worldwide. Although, a major chunk of the country’s primary energy need is met by coal, China plans to shift its focus towards cleaner fuels to control greenhouse gas emissions. Environmental regulations have mandated the country to invest in renewable and low carbon emitting fuels. Natural gas has evolved as one major clean alternative to coal as a primary fuel in China. The country produces and also imports natural gas. Natural gas imports can be primarily through pipelines and in the form of LNG. China is focusing on LNG as an economical source of natural gas and is planning eight new LNG regasification plants (two existing ones are at Guangdong and Fujian) along its Eastern and North eastern coast.
