Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, has added another how-to video to its series on selecting the best electronic components for various applications. "How to Select the Right Silicon Microphone for Your Application" has been launched, along with many more helpful tutorials offered through the company's YouTube channel.

A silicon microphone is a type of acoustic sensor. Acoustic sensors detect sound, or mechanical vibration, producing an electrical signal representing the sound or vibration detected. A silicon microphone, also known as a MEMS, or Micro Electrical-Mechanical System microphone, contains a pressure sensitive diaphragm etched directly into silicon through MEMS processing technology.

Sensitivity is a measure of the weakest detectable sound field strength, in decibels. For silicon microphones, sensitivity is a measure of the microphone output response to the acoustic pressure of a 1kHz 94dB SPL sine wave. It is referenced to the output Full Scale Range, or FSR, of the microphone. Sound Pressure Level, or SPL, is defined as the level of the pressure deviation from the local ambient pressure caused by sound waves. It indicates the loudness of sound, in decibels. Signal-to-Noise Ratio, or SNR, is a measure of the difference in level between the output response of a 1kHz 94dB SPL sine wave and the idle noise output, in decibels.

With the help of advanced MEMS processing technologies, silicon microphones offer advantages of smaller size and higher overall performance compared to the popular electret condenser microphone.

Silicon microphones are gaining popularity due to the small size and overall performance compared to other types of traditional microphone technologies, especially in high density and high performance applications like cell phones, cameras, audio players, portable navigation systems and other accessories.
