VitaMedica introduces the ABCs of Recovery Support, a tool that guides patients in finding nutritional solutions to speed plastic surgery recovery time. The ABCs address common concerns like bruising, swelling, inflammation and healing after a plastic surgery procedure.

"With so many supplements on the market, VitaMedica's ABCs of Recovery Support offers plastic surgery patients a simplified approach in selecting the best supplements for post-operative recovery," said Yvette La-Garde, VitaMedica's director of education.

The ABCs incorporate the use of Arnica Montana, Bromelain and Clinical Support:

A - Arnica Montana, is a homeopathic remedy that has been used for centuries to provide temporary relief of bruising, swelling and pain from soft tissue injury. As a natural bruise treatment, Arnica Montana is ideal for injectables and fillers (e.g., Botox®, Restylane®, Radiesse®), non-surgical procedures (e.g., Fraxel®, IPL) or facial surgery procedures (e.g., eyelid surgery, facelift, nose reshaping).

B - Bromelain, is an enzyme extracted from pineapple that helps reduce swelling, inflammation and pain. As a natural anti-inflammatory, bromelain is ideal for less-invasive surgical procedures (e.g. chin implant), minimally invasive surgery procedures (e.g. breast augmentation) or facial surgery procedures (e.g., eyelid surgery, facelift, nose reshaping).

C - Clinical Support, is a multi-nutrient supplement formulated specifically for recovery after plastic surgery. This two-part supplement promotes wound healing, boosts immune system function and reduces cellular damage generated by surgery and anesthetics. As a recovery supplement, Clinical Support is ideal for individuals with impaired wound healing (e.g. diabetics, smokers) and is well-suited for a wide range of comprehensive surgical procedures (e.g., tummy tuck, "mommy makeover", liposuction, Cellulaze®, facelift, nose reshaping).

It's no surprise that a proper diet supports overall health and wellness but around the time of surgery, optimal nutrition is even more important.

VitaMedica Founder and Medical Director David H. Rahm, M.D. notes, "Most people don't consider that for a wound to heal successfully, you'll need elevated levels of several key nutrients, including carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Without this, you may be at risk for increased bruising and swelling, delayed wound healing and other complications."

With so many aging baby boomers taking supplements, they naturally want to take their regular multi-vitamin & mineral after a plastic surgery procedure. However, a regular multi is not designed to support the body's needs for healing.

According to Dr. Rahm, most multis do not contain adequate levels of certain vitamins and minerals to support the healing process. Also, a multi doesn't contain nutrients that address bruising, swelling or inflammation. Importantly, multivitamins typically contain vitamin E. This vitamin is not recommended as it can have adverse effects when taken around the time of surgery.

As a practicing board-certified anesthesiologist for over 20 years, Dr. Rahm is very familiar with this topic. He says, "Vitamin E isn't the only nutrient that can be problematic during surgery. Dietary supplements as common as fish oil, Echinacea and St. John's Wort can all have adverse effects when taken around surgery."

To better communicate the ABCs of Recovery Support, VitaMedica has developed support materials including consumer brochures, infographics, videos and a dedicated webpage.
